FLR Hub Peru: strengthening the conditions to restore forest landscapes in Madre de Dios and San Martin

Location

Regions of Madre de Dios and San Martín, Peru.

About the project:

The Forest Landscape Restoration Implementation Hub (FLR Hub) is a global initiative aimed at supporting the achievement of the Bonn Challenge, the international goal of restoring 350 million hectares of degraded and deforested land by 2030. The project seeks to create enabling conditions for forest landscape restoration through technical and financial assistance tailored to the needs of participating countries.

FLR Hub is being implemented in Brazil, Colombia, Madagascar, Peru, Tanzania and Uganda. Overall, the initiative seeks to restore 200,000 degraded hectares, contribute to the sequestration of 500,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent and mobilize nearly 20 million euros in additional public and private financing.

In Peru, the project, funded by the German Government’s International Climate Initiative (IKI), is led by IUCN, with implementation by WRI. FLR Hub is embedded in an institutional context marked by the implementation of the National Strategy for the Restoration of Ecosystems and Degraded Forest Lands, approved in 2021, and the National Biodiversity Strategy and its Action Plan to 2030, as well as by the need to strengthen coordination among stakeholders, improve the conditions for attracting investment in restoration and consolidate more robust monitoring systems.

FLR Hub Peru seeks to strengthen the enabling conditions for restoration, improve governance and interinstitutional coordination, develop a project portfolio, connect initiatives with sources of public and private investment, and reinforce monitoring and reporting systems at the landscape, subnational and national levels. Its approach is based on an idea that is increasingly consolidated in Latin America: restoration is not only an environmental agenda, but also a strategy to strengthen water security, climate resilience, rural competitiveness, biodiversity and opportunities for communities.

At the operational level, the project in Peru prioritizes lines of work associated with strengthening governance, capacity building, public and private investment, reporting on global commitments and defining indicators to monitor progress and impacts.

Cross-cuttingly, it incorporates approaches related to inclusion and equity, youth, Indigenous Peoples, knowledge management and the harmonization of global frameworks, in order to contribute to restoration that is more effective, measurable and sustainable over time.

FLR Hub in Peru was prioritized for Madre de Dios and San Martin, Amazonian regions and strategic territories for generating lessons learned, strengthening capacities and advancing restoration schemes with potential for adaptation in other contexts of the country.
